چکیده

INDIAN PEDIATRICS 19 VOLUME 53__JANUARY 15, 2016 he incidence of classical galactosemia in different countries has been reported to vary from 1 in 30,000 to 1 in 75,000 [1]. The exact population incidence in India is not known as mutations and importance of GALT gene analysis in the diagnosis of galactosemia in Indian patients. The same study also revealed that the mutational profile amongst Indians differs significantly from other populations.

A Treatable Refractory Epilepsy: A Case Report

Introduction Biotinidase deficiency is a life threatening inborn error of metabolism specially when delayed in diagnosis. We report a 2-month-old male infant that presented with refractory infantile spasm, alopecia and seborrheic dermatitis. With a high suspicion of the biotinidase deficiency we started biotin 10 mg daily orally before definite diagnosis was made. Rapid treatment was life-savin...

Issues on universal screening for galactosemia.

Galactosemia is an inborn error of galactose metabolism, caused by an abnormality in the conversion of galactose and uridine diphosphoglucose to glucose-1-phosphate and uridine diphosphogalactose through the action of 3 sequential enzymes: galactokinase (GALK), galactose- 1-phosphate uridyltransferase (GALT), and uridine phosphogalactose 4-epimerase (GALE). The advent of newborn screening broug...

Dietary management of inborn errors of metabolism.

Inborn errors of metabolism are individually rare but are an important cause of mortality and morbidity in infants and children. Dietary therapy is the mainstay of treatment in phenylketonuria, maple syrup urine disease, homocystinuria, galactosemia and glycogen storage disease (Type I/III). Some disorders like urea cycle disorders and organic acidurias require dietary modification in addition ...

Compound heterozygosity with a novel S222N GALT mutation leads to atypical galactosemia with loss of GALT activity in erythrocytes but little evidence of clinical disease

Galactosemia is an inborn error of galactose metabolism caused by mutations in the GALT gene. Though early detection and galactose restriction prevent severe liver disease, affected individuals have persistently elevated biomarkers and often neuro-developmental symptoms. We present a teenage compound heterozygote for a known pathogenic mutation (H132Q) and a novel variant of unknown significanc...
